The oldest trick in the book

apple-iphone-3g-290x300It was one of the oldest tricks in the book and it had to happen some time, I suppose. I’ve seen it happen many times before allready in Lisbon and in other cities in the world, but I never fell for it up untill now:  my iPhone got stolen last saterday right in front of me.

So this is what happened; I was enjoying a coffee and reading a book in Rossio, a nice area of Lisbon  with the biggest shopping street and two nice squares with some very nice fountains on both ends. Sitting at the cafe next to one of the squares, a little girl and – I assume – her mother asked me to buy hankerchiefs. I had allready given a little money to someone else earlier that day, so it was enough for me. But they kept bothering me, more then usually. The little girl was on the left behind me at some point while the mother was on the right side behind me. I was holding my iPhone (I was texting). The little girl started tapping my shoulder annoyingly, so I turned to her and at the same time (soooo stupid!) I put my iPhone on the table. The little girl pushed the hankerchiefs in front of my face (so that I couldn’t see propperly anymore) and when I pushed the hankerchiefs away they finally went away. But off course when I looked down on the table the phone was allready gone! I had allready payed for my coffee so I went looking for them instantly. Obviously they were nowhere to be found. I suppose it really WAS the oldest trick in the book…

It’s a shame things like this still need to happen. It’s like you said: you think you never fall for shit like this, but at the most unsuspecting moment it just happens in the most straight forward way. The trick that makes you think “How could I be so stupid?! Ofcourse they wanted to steal it!”. All I got to say is, I hope this doesn’t influence your behaviour against strangers, ofcourse there are still people that actively use scams like this, but the last thing we need in this world is more people acting like everyone’s out there to get them or their belongings.

Which brings up another topic, is your capital the most important thing to you? Is your life over if you lose your phone, laptop and even all your money? I think you know the answer: no. In the end you will know that all you need is yourself and trust in both yourself and mankind. Believe in yourself and everyone else, cherish every moment in life and love your friends. A good way to summarize just that is a saying, I can’t remember from who:

“Smile, and the world smiles with you” :)

LOL, Nice blog man! but it happens everywhere! just not so much in the Netherlands as in a lot of other countries! :) but hear this; it’s worse here then it is in Istanbul! And Istanbul has a population of 23 million people. Lisbon has only 580.000. You second topic is quite interesting as well, and off course you are right. I also have to say that I don’t mind it so much that it happened. But in Holland most likely I would have been pist off like hell!

They were Roman gipsies who stole it, and wether you like them or not.. There are few people on this planet who live a tougher life than they do!

These are different perspectives from both sides, obviously :) And I can understand both of them. When you travel more and more I think you start seeing things from different perspectives, which in my opinion is very important. it’s probably the reason I’m not so pist off as well:)

How’s life btw man!? Still enjoying your internship? Hope to see you the 14th of november in Leeuwarden (check out my latest blog :D )

And same goes for you Esther haha! Hope to see you there too if you can find the time :P as for the iPhone; it’s not really a garantee thing. I just blocked my number right away. And I can unblock it when i get back home. Have to pay a little money for doing this, but that’s basicly it (or so they tell me…:P). I guess I’ll see it once I get back! :)
